Gambling scandal spreads in sumo
Several sumo stable masters are among those who admitted to gambling on baseball games in a recent survey conducted by the Japan Sumo Association (JSA), a JSA source revealed June 16.
The most recent scandal to hit the sumo world until now had been focused on wrestlers who had admitted to illegal gambling, but elders, including stable masters and tokoyama hairdressers, have also been found to be involved.
At an emergency executive meeting June 15, the JSA accepted an offer from ozeki Kotomitsuki's stable master, Sadogatake, for the wrestler to sit out the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament in July and he has been banned from sumo pending the results of a police investigation into his alleged gambling activities on baseball.
Aside from Kotomitsuki, several other unidentified top-division wrestlers were among those who admitted similar wrongdoing, a JSA source said. (Kyodo News)

Nuke session approves early steps to disarm
The 189 member nations of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) on May 28 adopted a detailed plan of small steps down a long road toward nuclear disarmament, including a sharply debated proposal to move toward banning doomsday arms from the Middle East.
The 28-page final declaration was approved by consensus on the last day of the month-long conference, convened every five years to review and advance the objectives of the 40-year-old NPT.
Under its action plan, the five recognized nuclear-weapon states — the United States, Russia, Britain, France and China — commit to speed up arms reductions, take other steps to diminish the importance of atomic weapons, and report back by 2014. (AP)

Toyota-Tesla EV tie-up at NUMMI
The heads of Tesla Motors Inc. and Toyota Motor Corp. surprised the auto world May 20 by announcing a partnership to develop and build electric vehicles at a recently shuttered auto plant in the San Francisco Bay area.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda said his company will invest 4.5 billion yen in Tesla when the company begins selling stock to the public, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his company will purchase the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., known as NUMMI, in Fremont, Calif., where the Model S electric sedan will be built.
"We're going to create electric cars together," Musk told a news conference at Tesla's office in Palo Alto, Calif. "It's a great honor to work with a company like Toyota, one of the automobile leaders of the world and one I've personally long admired." (AP)

Woman fine after heart pumps
A woman was released from a hospital in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, on May 18 after undergoing what may have been the world's first successful operation to embed two assist pumps for her heart, officials at the institution said. Unlike pumps outside the body, those embedded internally increase blood flow and are believed to be less likely to cause complications involving brain-blood circulation or infection. (Kyodo News)

Kawaguchi returns to World Cup squad
Veteran goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi and striker Kisho Yano were the biggest surprises in an otherwise familiar selection as national team manager Takeshi Okada named his squad for the World Cup on May 10. Shinji Ono, who many had tipped to make a late run into the 23-man roster, did not make the cut. Kawaguchi has been a member of every squad since Japan first qualified for the world's top tournament in 1998. (The Japan Times)

master league -Real vs Barce
"Real Madrid and Barcelona have 95 and 96 points respectively with a game to play in La Liga," writes Thomas Phillips. "Surely they're both on for some sort of record?"
In fact, they're on for a few. Both teams have already smashed the previous highest points tally in the Primera Division, set by Barça last season with 87. Pep Guardiola's side look ready to set a new best, so Real may have to settle for the unwanted title of the team scoring the most points without winning the league.
The pair will also set a remarkable standard of 197 points combined should they both win their final games. Obviously that's a La Liga record, but we can't find anything to beat it anywhere in the football world. It certainly beats the best we can muster in England – Reading and Sheffield United's combined 196 points in the Championship in 2005-06 – and that came over 46 games in a 24-team league rather than the 38 games and 20-team league that is the Spanish top flight. Rangers (85) and Celtic (103) combined for 188 points in the Scottish Premier League in 2001-02. Barry Town's 104-point romp to the Welsh title in 1997-98, when combined with runners-up Newtown, adds up to 182. Italy's best? A competitive 172 in 2006-07. If you can do any better, we'd be pleased to hear from you.
Real have already broken the record for most wins in a season, their 31 (presumably soon to be 32) beating the record of 28 set by themselves in 1987-88 and matched by the Barça of Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Hristo Stoichkov in 1996-97. Barcelona's solitary defeat this season is not a record, however. Athletic Bilbao in 1929-30 and Real Madrid in 1931-32 both went unbeaten in their league campaigns (though back then they consisted of just 18 matches).
Leo Messi is well short of a record-breaking season of scoring. His 32 was matched by Atlético Madrid's Diego Forlan last year, beaten by Ronaldo's 34 in 1996-97 and dwarfed by Hugo Sanchez's 38 (in 36 games) for Real in 1989-90 and Telmo Zarra's 38 in 30 games for Athletic Bilbao back in 1950-51.
Real will have to go some to set a new team high-scoring mark. The current ensemble have thus far mustered 101 six short of the Sanchez-inspired Los Blancos who scored 107 in 1989-90. And defensively they have both been a bit of a shambles, nowhere close to Deportivo's astonishing 18 conceded in 38 games in 1993-94 or the outright record of 15 set by Real in the 10-team top flight of 1931-32.
