First death penalty given by lay judges
A 32-year-old man on trial at the Yokohama District Court became Nov. 16 the first defendant sentenced to death under the lay judge system, convicted of brutally murdering two men last year.
The court said it had no choice but to hand down the death penalty, noting that although Hiroyuki Ikeda had confessed to the killings, his admission carried little weight.
But after reading out the sentence, presiding Judge Yoshifumi Asayama urged Ikeda to file an appeal, saying, "This is a conclusion of consequence, so as a court, we recommend that you file an appeal." Ikeda was charged with conspiring with another man to kill two men in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, in June 2009 before dismembering and dumping their corpses.

Only 58% of grads-to-be find jobs
Fewer than 60 percent of university students due to graduate next spring had secured employment as of Oct. 1, an all-time low for this time of year, a government survey found. The tally, 57.6 percent, was down 4.9 percentage points from a year earlier, the joint survey by the education and labor ministries found. The proportion of junior college students who had secured employment was 22.5 percent, down 6.5 points and also the lowest since the survey was first taken in 1996.

Japan, Vietnam tie up on reactors
Japan and Vietnam agreed Oct. 31 to work toward the early signing of a bilateral nuclear cooperation pact, with Japan securing contracts to build two nuclear power plants, paving the way for Japanese firms to export nuclear power generation technologies to the fast-growing economy. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung also agreed during their bilateral talks in Hanoi to join hands in developing rare earths, vital for making high-tech goods.

My summer
This summer, I usually studied hardly. For this reason, I could not enjoy this summer. However, I sometimes enjoyed this summer. I went to "Odaiba Gasshukoku in 2010", Tokyo Disney Land with my girlfriend. She lives in Shizuoka, so we meet rarely. It is sad for me. This winter, I want to enjoy going shopping.
Swiss dig world's longest tunnel
Workers hugged, cheered and set off fireworks as the huge drill broke through the last stretch of rock deep in the Swiss Alps. There was delight at the end of the tunnel — the world's longest — when it was completed Oct. 15. The $10 billion, 57-kilometer tube will connect Europe's high-speed rail network and is part of a larger effort to cut in half the number of trucks — now at 1.2 million — that thunder through the Alps each year. Despite some criticism at the cost — almost $1,300 (¥100,000) for every citizen — the proposal passed by a wide margin. TV stations across Europe showed the event live.

Nobel Prize winners testament to Japan’s high-level of research
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced Oct. 6 that the 2010 Nobel Prize in chemistry will go to three researchers — Mr. Richard Heck of the United States, and Mr. Ei-ichi Negishi and Mr. Akira Suzuki of Japan — for their work in developing the palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction, which has become an efficient tool for producing large and complex organic molecules.
The news indicates the knowledge level and experience of Japan’s chemical research. Hopefully, it will inspire Japanese chemists and other scientists, encourage more young people to choose scientific research as a profession and prompt the government to improve the research environment for scientists.
The skeleton of an organic compound is a chain of carbon atoms. Since carbon atoms are stable, it is difficult to make them react with each other when one attempts to create a new organic compound. In the reaction cited by the Swedish academy, palladium serves as a catalyst and induces carbon atoms to couple with each other. Thus researchers can produce new organic compounds in large amounts with precision and without having to put up with unwanted byproducts.
With Mr. Negishi and Mr. Suzuki added, 15 Japanese scientists (one of them having become a U.S. citizen) have won the Nobel Prize; six are chemists who have been honored since 2000. Many of them received the prize for their achievements made from the 1960s to the ‘80s.
The science budget was not large in those years. But researchers were able to freely develop their scientific breakthroughs. The government should increase the science budget to strengthen basic science. It also should free researchers from bureaucratic desk work that hampers their research work. A free atmosphere in laboratories is crucial for developing new ideas in science.

Chilean miners’ strong faith and will contributed to their rescue
By Oct. 13, all 33 Chilean miners trapped 600-plus meters underground since an Aug. 5 mine collapse had been pulled to safety through a vertical shaft specially constructed to accommodate a rescue capsule.
We congratulate them on their miraculous return from their more-than-two-month ordeal. Praise also goes to the engineers, medical personnel and other experts who took part in the against-all-odds rescue operation at the San Jose copper and gold mine in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.
The miners’ will to live as well as the encouragement they gave each other as professionals enabled them to persevere in wretched, cramped conditions — including humid temperatures of 30 to 35 C. For many, religious faith contributed to their belief in their eventual rescue.
The first 17 days in which the miners were completely out of communication with the outside world were the hardest time for them. After their survival was confirmed Aug. 22 through a camera and a microphone, they started to receive hot meals. Until then, they had consumed only two spoonfuls of tuna and milk, and a piece of cookie every 48 hours.
Families, friends and President Sebastian Pinera gave encouragement to the miners from the surface. The president flexibly mobilized resources in and outside of the country. Experts from the U.S. space agency NASA provided advice on how to support the trapped miners.
Shift foreman (and group leader) Luis Urzua played an important role in uniting the miners, whose ages ranged from 19 to 63 and who had different levels of experience. He divided the miners into three shifts — watching, resting and sleeping — and assigned them particular duties, such as patrolling, measuring oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations, and administering medical care. The fact that Mr. Urzua established a chain of command and that the miners were organized into a tightly knit team helped prevent them from feeling desperate or panicky.
Despite the personal and public joy over their miraculous survival, the ordeal must have left the miners with physical or psychological scars. We pray that they receive all the care they need to make a return to normal life. That could take some time.

Haneda's new runway, terminal open
A new runway and international terminal building opened at Tokyo's Haneda airport at midnight Oct. 20 in preparation for the resumption of full-fledged international operations.
Following the opening of the 2,500-meter fourth runway, regular international flights will resume Oct. 31 at the airport, officially known as Tokyo International Airport, for the first time since 2002. There will be flights connecting Tokyo with 17 overseas cities, including Bangkok, Paris, New York and Los Angeles.
Currently, Haneda mainly handles domestic flights and only short-haul charter flights to and from four overseas destinations — Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong — as all international carriers apart from a Taiwanese airline shifted to Narita airport when it opened just outside Tokyo in 1978.
Before 1978, Haneda was the main air gateway to Japan, serving both domestic and international flights. Since 2003, Haneda airport, close to the center of Tokyo, has been handling charter flights for international routes.

Bethune gets suspended sentence
An antiwhaling activist from New Zealand was convicted and given a suspended prison term July 7 for interfering with a Japanese whaling ship and illegally boarding it in the Antarctic Ocean in February.
The Tokyo District Court gave a two-year prison term, suspended for five years, to former Sea Shepherd member Peter Bethune, 45, for launching a bottle containing butyric acid onto the Shonan Maru No. 2 that injured one of its crew members Feb. 11, and for illegally boarding the vessel Feb. 15.
Bethune was not planning to appeal, according to his counsel. After the ruling, Bethune was taken into custody by immigration authorities. As he had technically illegally entered Japan by boarding the vessel, he is expected to be deported within days, said one of the attorneys, who declined to be named. Prosecutors had demanded a two-year prison term, while the defense team sought a suspended sentence. (The Japan Times)

Toll-free highway trials start
The government stopped collecting tolls on 50 sections along 37 rural expressways at midnight June 27 in line with a key promise made by the ruling Democratic Party of Japan in last year's election, and traffic immediately surged.
In the pilot program that will last until March 31, all expressways in Okinawa and most sections in Yamagata, Shimane and Oita prefectures will be toll-free for all vehicle types, regardless of whether they use the electronic toll collection system. The program will cost ¥100 billion. (Kyodo News)

Gambling scandal spreads in sumo
Several sumo stable masters are among those who admitted to gambling on baseball games in a recent survey conducted by the Japan Sumo Association (JSA), a JSA source revealed June 16.
The most recent scandal to hit the sumo world until now had been focused on wrestlers who had admitted to illegal gambling, but elders, including stable masters and tokoyama hairdressers, have also been found to be involved.
At an emergency executive meeting June 15, the JSA accepted an offer from ozeki Kotomitsuki's stable master, Sadogatake, for the wrestler to sit out the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament in July and he has been banned from sumo pending the results of a police investigation into his alleged gambling activities on baseball.
Aside from Kotomitsuki, several other unidentified top-division wrestlers were among those who admitted similar wrongdoing, a JSA source said. (Kyodo News)

Nuke session approves early steps to disarm
The 189 member nations of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) on May 28 adopted a detailed plan of small steps down a long road toward nuclear disarmament, including a sharply debated proposal to move toward banning doomsday arms from the Middle East.
The 28-page final declaration was approved by consensus on the last day of the month-long conference, convened every five years to review and advance the objectives of the 40-year-old NPT.
Under its action plan, the five recognized nuclear-weapon states — the United States, Russia, Britain, France and China — commit to speed up arms reductions, take other steps to diminish the importance of atomic weapons, and report back by 2014. (AP)

(AP)

Toyota-Tesla EV tie-up at NUMMI
The heads of Tesla Motors Inc. and Toyota Motor Corp. surprised the auto world May 20 by announcing a partnership to develop and build electric vehicles at a recently shuttered auto plant in the San Francisco Bay area.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda said his company will invest 4.5 billion yen in Tesla when the company begins selling stock to the public, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his company will purchase the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., known as NUMMI, in Fremont, Calif., where the Model S electric sedan will be built.
"We're going to create electric cars together," Musk told a news conference at Tesla's office in Palo Alto, Calif. "It's a great honor to work with a company like Toyota, one of the automobile leaders of the world and one I've personally long admired." (AP)

Woman fine after heart pumps
A woman was released from a hospital in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, on May 18 after undergoing what may have been the world's first successful operation to embed two assist pumps for her heart, officials at the institution said. Unlike pumps outside the body, those embedded internally increase blood flow and are believed to be less likely to cause complications involving brain-blood circulation or infection. (Kyodo News)

Kawaguchi returns to World Cup squad
Veteran goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi and striker Kisho Yano were the biggest surprises in an otherwise familiar selection as national team manager Takeshi Okada named his squad for the World Cup on May 10. Shinji Ono, who many had tipped to make a late run into the 23-man roster, did not make the cut. Kawaguchi has been a member of every squad since Japan first qualified for the world's top tournament in 1998. (The Japan Times)

master league -Real vs Barce
"Real Madrid and Barcelona have 95 and 96 points respectively with a game to play in La Liga," writes Thomas Phillips. "Surely they're both on for some sort of record?"
In fact, they're on for a few. Both teams have already smashed the previous highest points tally in the Primera Division, set by Barça last season with 87. Pep Guardiola's side look ready to set a new best, so Real may have to settle for the unwanted title of the team scoring the most points without winning the league.
The pair will also set a remarkable standard of 197 points combined should they both win their final games. Obviously that's a La Liga record, but we can't find anything to beat it anywhere in the football world. It certainly beats the best we can muster in England – Reading and Sheffield United's combined 196 points in the Championship in 2005-06 – and that came over 46 games in a 24-team league rather than the 38 games and 20-team league that is the Spanish top flight. Rangers (85) and Celtic (103) combined for 188 points in the Scottish Premier League in 2001-02. Barry Town's 104-point romp to the Welsh title in 1997-98, when combined with runners-up Newtown, adds up to 182. Italy's best? A competitive 172 in 2006-07. If you can do any better, we'd be pleased to hear from you.
Real have already broken the record for most wins in a season, their 31 (presumably soon to be 32) beating the record of 28 set by themselves in 1987-88 and matched by the Barça of Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Hristo Stoichkov in 1996-97. Barcelona's solitary defeat this season is not a record, however. Athletic Bilbao in 1929-30 and Real Madrid in 1931-32 both went unbeaten in their league campaigns (though back then they consisted of just 18 matches).
Leo Messi is well short of a record-breaking season of scoring. His 32 was matched by Atlético Madrid's Diego Forlan last year, beaten by Ronaldo's 34 in 1996-97 and dwarfed by Hugo Sanchez's 38 (in 36 games) for Real in 1989-90 and Telmo Zarra's 38 in 30 games for Athletic Bilbao back in 1950-51.
Real will have to go some to set a new team high-scoring mark. The current ensemble have thus far mustered 101 six short of the Sanchez-inspired Los Blancos who scored 107 in 1989-90. And defensively they have both been a bit of a shambles, nowhere close to Deportivo's astonishing 18 conceded in 38 games in 1993-94 or the outright record of 15 set by Real in the 10-team top flight of 1931-32.
