Haneda's new runway, terminal open

A new runway and international terminal building opened at Tokyo's Haneda airport at midnight Oct. 20 in preparation for the resumption of full-fledged international operations.
Following the opening of the 2,500-meter fourth runway, regular international flights will resume Oct. 31 at the airport, officially known as Tokyo International Airport, for the first time since 2002. There will be flights connecting Tokyo with 17 overseas cities, including Bangkok, Paris, New York and Los Angeles.
Currently, Haneda mainly handles domestic flights and only short-haul charter flights to and from four overseas destinations — Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong — as all international carriers apart from a Taiwanese airline shifted to Narita airport when it opened just outside Tokyo in 1978.
Before 1978, Haneda was the main air gateway to Japan, serving both domestic and international flights. Since 2003, Haneda airport, close to the center of Tokyo, has been handling charter flights for international routes.
